Using hands-on learning activities, the Piedmont Environmental Center (PEC) provides programs and a space for people to learn about, conserve, and appreciate the natural world. They also underline the interconnectedness and fragility of all of life’s elements. All of the Piedmont Environmental Center’s natural paths, as well as the High Point Greenway and Bicentennial Greenway, come together.
When a group of concerned people joined forces with the City of High Point in 1972, they were able to secure acreage adjacent to High Point City Lake Park for use as a plant and wildlife preserve. An extensive path system was developed at the site within a short period of time. The facility also hosted the very first environmental education programs in the country.
‘On the trails’ is a phrase that appears throughout the descriptions of the classes. One of PEC’s goals is to bring pupils out into the fresh air. The Piedmont Environmental Center’s 11 miles of foot trails and Bicentennial Greenway wind through 376 acres of lush hardwood and pine forests, as well as breathtaking lakefront ecosystems, on their route to the center. Each of the three principal loop routes, which are approximately three-quarters of a mile in length, is used during class.
There are 6.6 miles of natural trails and access to the High Point and Bicentennial Greenways at Piedmont Environmental Center, as well as educational classes for all ages, school groups, and individual programs, the North Carolina Mapscape, a 70′ x 30′ walk-on topographic map, small animal exhibits, a conference center, and classrooms.
Every age group and individual can learn about the fragile nature of life through their amazing learning programs and trips, which are offered for individuals and groups of all ages.
